Paper Wars in Chennai

The Times of India finally started their Chennai Edition today.

It was interesting to see the competition and it’s effect overnight.

But what many wouldn’t know about is that the war started a long time when TOI announced they’re going to come to Chennai. Journalists were ‘poached’, design spruced up and better content for readers.

The Aftermath

The Hindu slashed it’s rates to Rs 2.50 from Rs 3.25 (Rs 3 from Rs 4.50 on Sundays) from today.

The Indian Express got itself designed and dressed up well.

The Deccan Chronicle did what it does best - news like “Mens go for breast reduction” was in the front pages.

So finally the much needed competition and choice for people.

Subscribing to The Hindu and The Times of India

I still like The Hindu. I like to read news and not who dates whom or who got divorced. The paper quality is good. Nevertheless I’ll subscribe to The Times of India as well (an additional 60 bucks to ogle at chicks).

Some gyan for you guys after reading The Times of India (and The Hindu) for over 2 hrs :- M S Dhoni would like Rajnikant in Super Kings team as he considers him god. Victoria Secret has a manufacturing unit in Chennai (never knew this before)!

What’s with Times of India! They are starting a Goa branch as well! All the local media is on alert. Salaries have been bumped, rates have been dropped. Jeez.

I’m subscribed to only The Hindu at the moment, not sure if TOI is available here.

Will also buy TOI if they sell here :P

Goobi -
Even if their paper is not so good, they give others a run for their money and force them to reduce the rates. :D

Shankar -
The Hindu is still the best. TOI is good for tabloid news. :P

My vote for The Hindu too, but I got one small complain. The Hindu doesn’t give enough entertainment news!! Hollywood is my life, I have other sources of getting Hollywood news but wouldn’t it be great if The Hindu carries one page of Entertainment News daily.
After all what is the news …
In my state AP which is going for Assembly Elections shortly, political parties started their dirty games. The Ruling party says Rs 2/- for Kg Rice, the opposition responds with Rs 1/- for Kg Rice, there is another party with film star khandan that says 25paise for balcony ticket!!!
God damn you politicians, you don’t get this, is the rice only thing that poor people need ?? What about vegetable, their prices are soaring like summer heat !!
The other news :
Suicide bomber kills dozens in Iraq
11 year old girl raped by a teenage boy
Stock market crashes to an all time low
MS Dhoni changes his hair style
The Great Khali lost the match as he was cheated again

Just tell me where does one find peace ?? Thanks to Hollywood, I can breathe!!

If TOI has a lot of news about Priyanka Chopra and how Amir Khan is now happier than he was before, then I’m subscribing! I personally don’t care about the news as such.

We follow the same rabbit!!

I like TOI . It is the best.

Same pinch. :p Like our Hindi news channel have a obsession for ‘Kali news’, our DC/TOI has a eye for Page 3 and Tabloid news.

TOI is just a average fare. Nothing is there in the paper but how mother’s influence has a bad effect on kids (Anna Nicole Smith and her son died of drug overdose, Lindsay Lohan and her son are drunkards).

I agree that The Hindu has little less of ‘masala news’ but I’ve TOI covered up for that. :D Cinema Plus (on Fridays) is good but that’s just a weekly dose on *wood.

News and BS composition of the papers:-
DC is 90% BS and 10% news.
TOI seems to have 25% news and 75% BS.
The Hindu is 80% news and 20% BS

Go for it. I’m sure you won’t be disappointed. As the temperature soars, the dress of the chicks (in the photos) hits a low. Perfect equilibrium.

TOI is a great balance of all kind of news, but The Hindu despite less on E News, is good for learning some great English!!
DC is great is for Bollywood news, which I kind of hate
I think India should start Tabloids like the West…

^^
Nothing ever comes close the Sunday edition of The Hindu. The Sunday Literary review, Open Page and The Magazine. High quality stuffs.

#11 Shankar Ganesh on 04.16.08 at 1:36 pm

^^
Agreed

And also they publish some big tech news stories only on that day (in the middle of the main newspaper) :P

#12 Ashwin on 04.16.08 at 4:30 pm

Ohh yeah. I love that and the Tech news in the Thursday edition.

I get Hindu and TOI at the office. The IE redesign was nice. Looks arranged now.

#14 Sudhir Nair on 04.16.08 at 5:25 pm

Am from Mumbai. TOI rules roost here and I subscribe to the same. An average newspaper who focus quite a lot on masala news and have an in depth coverage of entertainment news as well.

Was seriously going to stop TOI because of it’s political leanings towards Cong; but they came out with an Eco Times combo offer which was irresistible. So am still stuck with TOI.

#15 Ashwin on 04.16.08 at 6:24 pm

Nirmal -
IE has the best design. Indulge (Fridays) is amazing.

Sudhir -
Ohhh…. does TOI bundle ET also? Long before TOI came to Chennai, ET was having presence here. I would love to subscribe to ET as well. Hope they offer along the same lines in Chennai too.

#16 Azeem on 04.18.08 at 11:26 am

Oh I forgot to comment on the last line ‘ Victoria Secrets opening up a Manufacturing Unit in Chennai’
So do we expect Heidi Klum to be in India anytime soon !!

#17 Ashwin on 04.18.08 at 7:29 pm

^^
That would be great. Even better would be Alessandra Ambrosia coming here.

In ahighly competetive world price cut is a strategy to exploit new market oppurtunities. But one serious thing is to notice is that the news papers with lesser price and more circulstion are diverting from the principle of ethics of journalism that is morality and objectivity

#19 Krishna Aradhi on 05.29.08 at 6:57 pm

ToI is as biased as a newspaper can get. And The Hindu has sold out to the Chinese commies. The only balanced newspaper according to me is The Indian Express.
