Boost the Volume in QuickTime Player

While watching movies, you might notice that QuickTime Player’s volume is not clear enough even with the volume bar at 100%.

Audio, especially the AC3 codecs ’sound’ low. Holding down shift key while clicking the volume bar or holding down Cmd key also doesn’t work.

Here’s a work around to get the volume boost in our QuickTime player. It works like a charm.

Increasing Volume in the QuickTime Player

1. Grab Audio Hijack Pro.

2. Launch it and ‘hijack’ QuickTime Player. This will launch QuickTime Player.

3. Then increase the ‘Gain’ slider (under the ‘Effects’ tab) to the maximum (238%). You’ll have to do this only when you launch the application for the first time. From the next time onwards, just launch the application and press the hijack button.

4. Launch the movie in QuickTime Player. You should notice difference in the volume.

5. Similarly, you can pump up volumes of iTunes, iChat, System wide audio, etc. by hijacking the corresponding menu item.

The numbers indicate the step explained above.

One issue. Once you hijack the audio to increase the volume, it will be locked and you cannot control it through the Apple Remote unless you quit Audio Hijack Pro.

The volume boost might not be as much as in VLC Player, nevertheless it’s more than sufficient than what you need.

It’s time to hit QuickTime Player and enjoy the movie. :)

This Audio Hijack Pro in addition to this, can do a host of other functions like extraction audio from a video, save your Skype/iChat audio chats, enhance podcasts, etc.. Try this on your Mac, you might find it useful.

This can spoil the speakers though, if I am not wrong..

Not sure of that. What if I connect to external speakers?

Ashwin,

I am not an electrical engineering student, but what I was told is that since sound waves are in sine waves, when you play music at volumes higher than what is set by the manufacturer, the sound may breach the maximum limit at Sin90…this may damage the speaker…

Hope you got what I meant.. ;)
