5 Reasons why an Apple MacBook Pro is Better than a Laptop

Apple Logo

Is it justified to buy an Apple MacBook Pro when you can buy a Laptop of less than one third of the cost or buy a Laptop with same specs for a less than 75% the cost of an Apple?

I did some research, consulted with some Mac users and finally knew why this is the ultimate Laptop MacBook to own. We’ll see why…

I’m not evangelizing a Windows user to switch. Not even trying.

5. Bells and Whistles

MacBook Pro includes Front Row and the Apple Remote. We got a 1.3 Megapixel camera - iSight. The Trackpad can detect if you have one finger or two (when we do the right click and scrolling) and it ignores unintended touches.

My Inspiron 6400 was loaded with unwanted softwares (read bloatwares). I really wanted to format, but being an office lappy, I uninstalled all the shit I’ll never use. With an Apple MacBook Pro, we get the useful good softwares. Remember what you get with Windows? Probably Calculator, IE, Notepad and yeah Paint. With Tiger you get Spotlight, Dashboard, Mail, iChat, Safari, Address Book, QuickTime, iCal, DVD Player, Xcode Developer Tools.

4. Excellent Support

Apple is known for it’s good support. One instance with Milind: “I asked my apple dealer how to clean my iMac keyboard cause the keys have gone a little hard”. The reply:

‘No probs. Just get it here tomorrow I’ll give you a new one’

All Macs come with international, on-site warranty.

3. Brilliant Engineering

The 15″ MacBook Pro features new LED backlighting, the first for a laptop. The display is stunning, battery life increases from 30-60 mins and environmental friendly as well. The keyboard backlighting also helps, when you want to work late in night and don’t want disturb others. Not to forget the MagSafe power adapter - When someone trips on the power cord, it does not drag your notebook along with it. It snaps out cleanly.

Illuminated Keyboard

Also being one inch thin (less than the size of 3 CDs stacked together) and 5.4 and 6.8 pounds, respectively, the 15 and 17″ MacBook Pro models are among the thinnest, lightest notebooks.

2. Run OS X, Windows and Linux together

The 3 major OS running in a single machine. Imagine running Tiger/Leopard with Vista/XP/both and Ubuntu side by side at the same time!

1. Owning an Apple product is a class of it’s own

This piece of hardware is luxury status symbol. After all, we’re paying $2,000+ to join the cult following.

More reasons Why you’ll love a Mac.

Why all this fuss?

Wondering why you’re seeing an Apple Category here and why I’m posting about an Apple product? I was planning to buy a Laptop even before my first laptop. If you see that post, I was looking for Asus G1 or Dell XPS M1710. My PC at Chennai is over 8 years old and it’s time I get a powerful PC.

I’m buying the lower end 15″ MacBook Pro. It’s more than sufficient for my use - heavy net user (Blogging/P2P/Browsing), Photoshop and Movies. It’s $2000, but purchasing through college students deal for $1800 and a free iPod nano.

A Mac fanboy is born before he can even used an Apple hardware. :)

As far as I know, only Jumbo Electronics & Virgin Megastore (Deira City Center and maybe in Marina Mall, AUX) sell Apple in UAE. I also saw an Apple store in IBN Battuta Mall.

Forget buying from Jumbo they have only PowerBook (not MacBook Pro) and it’s way too expensive (over Dhs 11,000). Virgin have the latest Macs but I’m not sure about the price.

It’s good that you buy from USA (or UK), as it’s comparatively cheaper. The college students deal is on till Sept. 16th.

Thanks! Don’t worry, I’ve added Apple Category here.. rest assured that The Newspaper Blog is attacked by Mac fanboys.

I thought of adding that, but it’s not necessary now.

A Mac fanboy is born before he can even used an Apple hardware. :P
so when is expected touch to elite beauty ?

#6 Nirmal on 09.05.07 at 12:46 pm

To be frank, I dont like Mac, may be because I have used it less and used Windows more, I would still prefer to buy a better configured laptop then going for a mac book. :D

#7 Saurav on 09.05.07 at 12:48 pm

I prefer not to give justification for some of the wrong things u mentioned here.

HP DV9xxx comes with HP remote & HP Media Center suite which does more then Front row & Apple Remote. You can even play music when laptop is closed.

It comes with a 1.3 mp webcam too…

Who told u that Macbook came first with LED Backlit display? They were the last. HP, Dell had this since ages.

I checked today at Sharaf DG (Deira City Center) and it’s costing Dhs 11,300 for the 2.2 Ghz 15″ model and Dhs 12,500 for the 2.4 Ghz model.

rahul -
By the end of next month. :D

Saurav -
I was looking for a 15″ model and as far as I know, no HP model with 15″ came with a better resolution as Apple MacBook Pro had.

I never said that only Apple comes with remote and a 1.3 Mega Pixel camera. I claimed only for the LED Display. I read in many reviews that this is the first lappy with come with it, maybe other came later on…
Nirmal -
Even I’ve not used Mac OS X before, but from what I’ve seen, it’s not that difficult to switch.

#9 Saurav on 09.05.07 at 7:45 pm

I guess u read wrong, Sony, Dell, HP came with LED Backlit display long before apple. Just check Engadget.

Sine Apple is not the only company which comes with Webcam & Media Center remote, those 2 points are irrelevant for the comparison.

You wanted a 15″ LED Backlit display, did u tried checking Dell 1520?

Hey guys - HOLD ON!!!!
I’ve been using MAC’s since they came out. Finally THEY ripped me off. I took it to the mac store to get a bigger drive put in - and it was never seen working again !!! I spent $3000.00 on my titanium. They had it for 9 months claiming to work on it.. Then they said they’d give me a new MACbook pro. A year later I am without my mac - no new one… And Apple is screwing with my atty. DON’T trust them….. THEY SUCK!!!!!!!!!!

#11 navin on 09.05.07 at 9:24 pm

Thank you for ur help.

#12 rahul on 09.05.07 at 9:35 pm

@beth , that was really horrible if it’s true .

#13 Measurer on 09.05.07 at 10:15 pm

A stack of 3 CDs is far less than an inch. A stack of 3 old-style CD cases is close, but just the CDs would be about an eighth of an inch.

#14 Capthook on 09.05.07 at 11:17 pm

I’d pay $2,000+ just to never deal with another Windows Spyware or virus removal again.

Switched the office to Mac’s 2 years ago, and since then we spend more time actually working WITH the computers rather than ON them.

I have a MacBook Pro ; and the only design flaw is the metal casing. It cuts down on wifi range (seriously) ; and you rest your wrists when typing over this thin bar of metal (above the cd slot) and this bends obviously towards the gap for the cd slot. Flaws aside, this is a really nice notebook - best one I’ve ever owned. It’s light, but not light on power and screen size ; and yeah - it’s sexy as hell too. But Apple’s OS (OSX) Trumps all of that - it is a truely powerful and stable OS.

Check out Engadget:
http://www.engadget.com/2007/0…..cbook-pro/

“Apple left a little mystery in their MacBook Pro announcement today, and being that this marks their first official release of an LED-backlit laptop”

Happy?

And I get Remote and Front row and I clearly mentioned that I love the Bells and Whistles. That is of Apple.

navin -
Don’t buy in UAE man. These ppl are robbers. I can tell you that even in India many electronics items are cheaper. Get in USA.

#16 Ashwin on 09.06.07 at 7:27 am

Bad Luck. Hopefully nothing like this happens for me.

Measurer -
Thanks for pointing out my mistake. It’s really less than 3 CD cases stacked together. Check it out:

Capthook -
Yeah man. No need to spend on AVs, Anti Spywares and Firewalls. It’s true that you said: “we spend more time actually working WITH the computers rather than ON them”

#17 Manas on 09.06.07 at 7:28 am

What a timing for such a post !

I am gonna buy a laptop in October.. I have settled on Dell but now will give Apple a look. ;)

#18 Ashwin on 09.06.07 at 7:33 am

Get MacBook man, if you can’t afford MacBook Pro. It’s worth all the money, let me tell you. :D

Dell sucks big time. I’ve Inspiron 6400 and there are lot of problems:
1. The cover get scratched easily.
2. The screen quality is not that great. Personal opinion though.
3. My colleagues faced issues. HDD crashed and charger failed <– in a single lappy.
4. We (in our Office) buy atleast 4-5 Lappies in a month. We’re buying Toshiba only.
5. Battery issues. Did you see the second Dell laptop to burn? For atleast 5-6 times, my laptop drain would have gone to 0%, even after I shut out my Windows.

#19 kanak on 09.06.07 at 10:28 am

Hey ashwin, Congrats for deciding the beauty … Macbook will get you a unique stand in the crowd. First time i visited a Apple store in Waterfront mall in Festival city. Well, i felt bad of settling for Dell … I think i should have also got MAC .. .But no worries .. May be my next buy :D

#20 Ashwin on 09.06.07 at 8:10 pm

What Dell you have? And for how much did ya get that for?

#21 Manas on 09.07.07 at 11:40 am

Dell has so many problems ????

I never knew that. Now I have to think again……

#22 Vijay on 09.07.07 at 6:45 pm

I really wanted to try out Mac OS for a long time now.. Unfortunately, I’ve not gotten near a Mac till date!
You could show me yours the next time you are in Chennai ;)

#23 Ashwin on 09.07.07 at 7:33 pm

Vijay -
