How to Choose a Profession you’ll Enjoy and Succeed

My first guest post is up on my friend Deep’s Blog So, are you doing what YOU wanted to? or….

I write about how to choose a profession so that we enjoy and address the dilemma that our young students face after schooling.

Some excerpts:

I passed with First Class (missed distinction by 2 marks-74.48%) and was ranked 9th in my class. I was jobless (happily ‘unemployed’- earning hundreds of dollars) for one year, post graduation. I learnt a lot in life than in a decade of my education. Two years since my graduation now, I know nothing in Engineering (’forgot’ what I learnt). I’ve a job (Product Engineer - Mapping & GIS) which is no where related to my degree and requires no knowledge of engineering.

Enjoy the 3-4 years of your graduation. Do you really like solving Math problems, drawing [crap], learning about dudes & events that you don’t care, study mug like a parrot, read Literature like it’s nobody’s business? Well, that time won’t come back.

For those who wanted to know more about me, the article has my short story and what I’m doing now. The first step for an About page for this blog. :)

Read it. Comment there or let me know what you think.

Same thing happened with me in my life. I was in Hindi medium school till 8th then in 9th i did a lot of hard work to learn english and got 71% in 10th in English medium school.

I did 12th in Non medical coz i wanna be an engg. but i got 51% marks in 12th due to some fmaily problems. At that time i decided to stop study and i was gud for nothign at home.
My father admitted me ina corrospondence graduation in computers even i dont know anything about comuters that time. After that i did my MCA now I am working in Accenture as Software Engg. and trust me what work i m doing now has no link with my education they trained me to work on this technology called siebel.

Yeah the next in this series may be to address the dilemma of the young graduate after they pass out. :D

In fact, I wrote in more, but edited out many things that I felt was unnecessary.

Good going man. All the best for your future.

now I am working in Accenture as Software Engg. and trust me what work i m doing now has no link with my education they trained me to work on this technology called siebel.

I know this. It happened with my case also. Any high school educated person can do most of the jobs these days. Why not do something that you really love instead of studying for a job.

Actually the problem here is our education system which is not practical but theortical. Why not this education system changes to practical education so that a 12th pass 16-17 years old guy even can do whatever he wanna do in his life.

But this system is theortical we have to be graduate for a job and the stuffs we learn just graveyard as soon as we join our job. :(

Thanks man. Feels good to hear that you are inspired from this blog!

The jobs needs us to be matured - otherwise, the requirement is a high school education. If that’s the requirement, when why waste your time doing something you don’t like?

Another great post from you … great going ashwin. you are right, the maturity to the job level is the important thing and that what graduation teaches us. for example the mini projects gives a small idea of documentation , reading and exploring new things. Well, unless you are sure what you are interested in , choosing the right direction is always gonna be difficult.

Thanks kanak. I guess this is the post, for which I’ve received a lot of compliments than ever.

And I don’t agree with you when you say that graduation teaches us maturity. Even if you’re in home, you’ll learn a lot.

#10 kanak on 09.02.07 at 8:59 am

@ashwin : since mine was a personal opinion, so there are chances that many will disagree :) . For me , graduation taught me a lot of things , knowing the world , knowing the different kind of ppl. The thing was since I was from a remote area , I think i didnt get to interact with much ppl , and graduation helped me in that. In home , you learn , but you dont get so many point of views which you can get during graduation with so many ppl with so many mindsets. :)

#11 Ashwin on 09.02.07 at 12:21 pm

I don’t say that graduation doesn’t teach you anything… what I’m trying to stress is the fact that graduation is not your only passport to maturity and learning things.

Dudes,

I had many different careers in life. I started out as a marine engineer after 4 years of studying something I didnt enjoy much. I then got a degree in EE from an universtiy in USA and as I was studying part time for this degree I started working as a unix admin. I like this computer stuff better than the drudgery in the engine room in a ship but this is also shit. As I look back, one thing I am certain of is that what I always wanted and want is freedom. As long as you work for someone else, you have limited freedom. To achieve freedom in life, you need money. So my suggestion, dont waste your time — earn money by doing something so you can retire early and enjoy freedom. If you work for yourself(have your own biz), obviously this doesnt apply for you. In that case I am open to your suggestion how to earn money :)
