How to Play High Definition (HD) Movies?

Do you remember when you downloaded these x264/HD torrent file baited by the wonderful cinematic experience?

HD Movie Titles

After sweating your Internet line, you try (in vain) opening the files.

HD movies are basically high definition, high resolution format which looks gorgeous. You can detect wheat and chaff from the file size. I’ve seen some 1080p torrents which are more than 35 GB in size. Most the 720p x264 will come ~4.4 GB.

This goodness after extraction will be in .mkv (or .mp4) format. How do you play this .mkv file? VLC player will play it but sometimes you won’t get sound and only video. Plus the clarity is also not good.

So, here’s a guide that will help you live hard (not just survive) in the world of P2P and HD.

Hardware Requirements

You need a processor with SSE3 instruction set (latest powerful Intel/AMD Proccy), GForce 8500 or higher Graphics Card, 2 GB RAM (it might play with 1 GB also, depends on the resolution), with all codecs armed in your computer to play these 1080p, 1080i or 720p HD stuffs.

Software Requirements

To cut short on the technical BS, you need to have certain codecs installed before we open in Media Player (recommended:BS Player, Windows Media Player or Media Player Classic) . 3 ways to do it:-

1. CCCP
Combined-Community-Codec-Pack (CCCP) is the codec pack you need. Install it and open the files in media player.

2. Lazy Man’s MKV
Another option is Lazy Man’s MKV - a Matroska Playback Pack for minimalists who hate bloated codec packs. It install only 3 filters that we need to require.

3. Install what’s needed
If you want to install only the required codecs, then you download this codec pack need the following:-
CoreAVC Video Codec 1.2.0.0
CoreAAC Audio Decoder 1.2.0.575 rev.3

Misc:
DirectVobSub (Subtitles with CoreAVC)
Ogg Vorbis
AC3 Audio codec (Vorbis and AC3 are audio codecs in case your file doesn’t play sound)

Sometimes HD movie can be a .WMV which requires this codec or, if you have a licensed copy of Windows you can download and install Windows Media Player 10 and play .WMV HD movies.

You can find some of the HD goodness at Torrent Trackers like HDBits.org, BitSoup.org, TorrentLeech.org (all Private Torrent Trackers). Even other popular BitTorrent Trackers will have HD stuffs. If you have a good Internet connection and powerful computer, then settle for the best.

I don’t know why you said Ratio killer. These type of torrents will actually help in uploading more enabling you a chance of good ratio.

Other than that, yes you need to a good connection and a good PC to even think of HD.

Download speeds are really a problem here. I guess I need to find another way to get the HD movies first

Last week I was in Mall of the Emirates and I saw a lot of Blu Ray movies in Sony Store. Other places also had some Blu Ray movies. So I almost decided that my next lappy should able to play HD/Blu Ray material.

The moral of the story:- if you can’t download, then you should buy the stuffs. :D

Hmm…there are some HD Players. But those are also expensive. Anyway what’s the point? You should also have a better TV to enjoy the experience.

I think buying a better PC is cheaper than buying a good HD TV.

I’ve gone exclusively HD for the past 6 months. Only stuff which there’s no possibility of HD I might step down and download a 700MB but otherwise its like taboo.

Yeah… HD is like addiction. The only factor limiting me was my net connection.
