Irrespective of what others feel, I think Animation (NOT Cartoon) movies are for all kids from 6 to 60 to enjoy.
Do you know there are at least 6 animation movies in the IMDb Top 250 movies of all time?
Scott Adams of The Dilbert Blog asked a creative question. What creatures are left for the next animation movies?
The Godfather and The Shawshank Redemption of the animation movie studio are Disney - Pixar and DreamWorks Animation SKG. But we have a problem. They ran out of creatures!
Let’s see the list of the creatures out of which we have blockbusters…
Toys - Toy Story 1 & 2, Robot (maybe)
Insects - A Bug’s Life, Antz (featured here)
Fishes - Finding Nemo, Shark Tale
Super Heroes - The Incredibles
Cars - Cars
Monsters - Monsters, Inc. , Shrek Trilogy
Birds - Happy Feet, Chicken Run, Chicken Little
Animals (of all kind) - Madagascar, Over the Hedge, The Wild, Wallace and Gromit
Pests - Ratatouille, Flushed Away, Stuart Little (if you can count this too)
I’m very exited about the next Pixar movie about a rat working in a kitchen. Scott exclaims:
But honestly, my first reaction on seeing the rat in the kitchen trailer was “they ran out of creatures.” It’s no one’s fault. There are only so many types of creatures in the universe.
So true and correct!
Recipe for a Blockbuster
Kids (myself included) like:
1. Creativity - In kids language, see & experience something different
2. Great story and screenplay
3. Fairy Tale, Magic and maybe Mythology - I’m yet to a animation movie with a heavy and sad ending!
4. Creatures - Of any kind, as long as they don’t look scary! (We all loved Shrek, Mike & Sulley, and those different shapes of animals in Madagascar)
All the movies from Pixar and DreamWorks has the essence of the above qualities.
The search for the next animation character
Coming back on the creative question…
It’s little difficult to think of any creatures and things that have not been done before or unique. Even among the listed, there has been repetition. There’s still some I came up with (believe it not, I was thinking about this ever since Scott posted!)
- pets (cats, dogs, etc)
- trees or plants
- mythological creatures
- books
- aliens, angels (Scott’s suggestions)
So can you think of creatures that might potentially be a kids-oriented CGI blockbusters material? And did ya like the cartoon strips?

Did you see Happy Feet movie? The strips were all based on the movies. If you would have seen the movie, you should have understood the cartoon.
And what’s up with Madagascar?

- From Dusk till Dawn (Tarantino and Rodrirez Rocks. Bonus - Salma Hayek & George Clooney!!)
- Fight Club
- American History X
- Memento (drama with twist ending)

All the above movies are action movies with some thriller.
