Heard about the New Torrent Client Tribler? It Sucks.

Every time a new torrent client comes, the same thing happens.

Turns out to be lame. This time it’s the turn of Tribler.

Honestly I never knew this one before TorrentFreak featured it. Then was on Digg, Lifehacker and Techcrunch. Enough hype.

Let me run through the list of ‘features’ the Tribler boasts off and the reality..

Easy downloading
Easy? When I added my torrent file (by the way, you can’t click and drag into the window), I had to ’search’ to find where it was going on. No torrent stats and all the bells & whistles. Till now I don’t know where to pause the torrents!

Recommendation and Friends
The recommendation thing is bloated. Just go to YouTube and watch the things you want.

Video on Demand
Haha.. this is a joke. Don’t get fooled by this. The in built player (it also sucks) plays the file, you’re downloading. This is possible in any p2p tool provided you have the initial parts downloaded.

Wealth of content
After waiting and connected for over 20 minutes, I was connected to 64 persons and 106 files! My ARES will give more files.

All-in-one interface
This is what I don’t like. I love ARES, but I don’t use it’s torrent client. Tribler jams in youtube, torrent client and p2p things.

Tribler - Bloatware

I’ll tell you why it’s not a good thing to install it.

• 19+ MB setup file? utorrent is less than 200k.
• Has porn. You don’t even need to search for it. It’s ‘recommended’.
• The inbuilt player/ screen doesn’t seem to load. What is the point of ‘Play ASAP’?
• Tribler will by default exchange your download history with others. What a great tool for the four-letter organizations.

A word about the YouTube player and downloader. The screen and the player doesn’t works (at least for me). Whatever you search under video clips/files, it will display YouTube results. That too it will take time to give the search result. If this is the case you can go to YouTube and view the things. In case you want to view, download and search YouTube files, then get Democracy Player.

One Torrent Client to rule them all - utorrent

utorrent still is the best torrent client. Just a 200kb download, no need for installation, no straying in windows registry with .dll’s, good speeds and a light on resource client.

My next stop is going to be the testing of new Azureus client with the Vuze thing.
