Who said Dubai is a ‘dry’ place?

That as a picture shot at our flat. Sometimes it was turned into mini bars. Made public here, just to bust a myth that UAE is a ‘dry’ place.

UAE being a Muslim country, it’s difficult for ‘drinkers’. You can’t find any bars that we find otherwise unless the place happens to be a upmarket place. You can still find many ways to get your hands on one of those bottles. The easiest way is buying them from Dubai Duty Free shops at the Dubai International Airport. There are almost no restrictions and you can bring home some liquors from the airport and consume in Dubai Emirate. Of course there are illegal ways as well. ;)

For information on liquors and consumption stuffs in the UAE, check out Legal permit to buy spirits @ Gulf News. Now I’ll go about busting myths about Dubai/UAE.

5 Dubai myths busted

* The headings below has been taken from Secret Dubai Dairy but the comments are mine.*

1. Dubai is roasting hot
Right from the time I landed in Dubai, the climate is good. Right now also it’s OK. I bet that it’s better than the climate back at Chennai. Anyway it tends to get sultry dry and hot during peak summer. But almost all the indoors are Air Conditioned. People say they wear woolen socks much to the amusement to onlookers! I got so sick of AC, that I yearn to get back to the normal condition back home.

2. Women have to cover
As far as I know 90% of the Arab women do wear burqa, but Dubai houses more girls who many many heads turn. Secret Dubai dairy express it better: “Nowhere else in the world do women wear sluttier clothes even in the workplace than in Dubai: skin tight jeans, fishnet stockings, plunging Lycra, shoes that the wildest London fetish club would baulk at.” Women wear sluttier clothes, skin tight jeans, fishnet stockings, plunging Lycra, shoes that the wildest London fetish club would baulk at.

Sorry folks, I don’t have photographic proof. ;)

3. People speak Arabic
Arabs are the ones who speak Arabic. Otherwise people predominately speak English, Hindi, Malayalam and Urdu.

4. A dry, desert city
People you have to drive in Sheikh Zayed Road. On the way to Jabel Ali, you see many skyscrapers and that sets the tone and tells a lot about the so called ‘desert’. Also it rains and sometimes heavily (this year at Al Ain).

5. Shoppers paradise
I have also observed this fact here: Things that I noticed in Dubai . I’ve tough time explaining to my mom that it’s pointless purchasing some things. Sometimes things which people believe (like Gold, Electronic things) that are cheap are actually same as in their country and sometimes expensive. Dubai has the same overpriced, designer shops, different smoke-filled, impossible-to-park-in Malls.

And how can I forget this: It’s an Islamic Country

You’ve missed my point what I wanted to tell. I’m and was never desperate. That post was only to inform my current state. :)
