“Usenet - its easy to use and learn, and quicker than a blow job from a Supermodel.” - A comment at TorrentFreak
95% of the folks who using the Internet to download don’t know that they have multiple choice at their disposal to get what they want!
Do you know you have more than 7 different ways to download from? We’ve the classic http (that is, plain links off sites), P2P softwares (like Ares, Limewire), file hosting sites (like Rapidshare, Megaupload), Torrents, IRC, Usenet and some Private top scene release sites.
It will seem that Usenet, IRC and things like that are for geek gods, but they’re easy (even I can download using them!) and once you’re hooked and come to know the things better, then you rule the roost. You’ll never even come back to http or Rapidshare downloads.
Recently I came across a good tutorial on Usenet posted at TorrentFreak (I love that blog) as how to download via Usenet. I’ve already covered How to download stuffs using torrents, so it would be a value addition if I post how to download using Usenet and IRC.
The irony of this downloading things with Usenet and IRC is those are not first used for downloading purposes! Then we people started using for our file sharing requirements. I’m not posting my own review as I’m not that well versed and expert in these areas even though I know how to download.
What is Usenet and How can I download things?
Usenet is short for User’s Network. Usenet is nothing but a online forum, discussion or bulletin board. It’s also called by the name of Newsgroups. Each newsgroup acts as a public discussion forum and may be read by anyone at any Usenet site worldwide using a newsreader.
There are 3 great guides for different Usenet clients. Check them out:
1. Downloading using Grabit @ UsenetFreak
2. Downloading using Alt.binz @ UsenetFreak
3. Downloading using NZB-O-Matic Plus (NOMP) @ Mantup
The only disadvantage with Usenet is that most of the newsgroups won’t be free. Yes, Usenet is ‘free’ but if you are willing to shell out some spare cash - it will open you up to opportunities that you could never imagine. Most the Usenet users will feel a sense of privilege as most the time things are out in Usenet before coming to other P2P networks. You have to pay, but every penny is worth. Would you imagine, you download things at over 100 mpbs!?
What is IRC and How can I download things?
IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat. It’s just like your Instant messenger like Yahoo Messenger, MSN, etc… but looks geeky. You can chat with persons you know with clients like mIRC or ChatZilla plugin for Firefox. The best part is you can using IRC to download things!
Here’s one good Tutorial explaining you how to use IRC and download the things you want right from MP3, games, movies, softwares, books and porn! How to Download stuffs using IRC @ AnimeSuki
Hope you found this article useful and trying things out of your comfort zone of http and torrents!

But how come i can download @over 100 mpbs when my connection is capped to 2mbps ?
True. I meant that we can download at over 100 mbps if your net connection is that fast enough. So if you have 2 mbps, then you get 240 kbps speed.
I have never tried IRC before but will try it now .
“Scene” is always IRC ,it’s thing that let’s you leech without upload -good if u have good speed , bad for slow speed as “channel time out ” comes.
Usenet I doubt whether it will work here , I tried it many times but no luck .
I certainly will have to try out IRC. i’ve heard much about it but I haven’t tried it out..

I have tried Usenet for almost 3 days. It’s absolutely cool man. You’ll never want to try out torrents after that. I got to Use Usenet, one site gave 3 day (3 GB) promo.
Yeah! IRC rules, it is where everything appears first. I learn to download from IRC sometimes back
While mentioning about newsgroups I think you should make it clear that only the file sharing groups are paid (You can access other groups via Google Groups)
OR if you try you can find NNTP servers easily for text purposes… I have never downloaded from Usenet because I am on a dial up but I believe that I can do that, with little help

I did mention about the newgroups are not free.
Having said all that, if you manage to find something for free, then Usenet rocks. No substitute for it.
