Sequels or Se’kill’s?

I was shocked to see the advertisement of Titanic 2 in today’s The Hindu newspaper. There were some rumors that Leonardo DiCaprio and James Cameron will join hands to make a sequel to the 1997 blockbuster Titanic. But this movie is not from the same team that made Titanic. Titanic is the best movie that I have seen till date. We’ll have wait till May 12th to know how bad it’s going to be.

From Basic Instinct 2 to Matrix to Ice Age 2, no film is sparred. A sequel can be good only if the plot continues with the previous movie. Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions were not good as Matrix was a complete movie by itself. If they don’t have good screenplay, they churn out movies like Aliens Vs Predator!

Some Exceptions:
There are very few movie sequels which are as good or even better than their original make. Let me list some movies that I liked in this regard..

Godfather 2 (De Niro rulezzz and better than the original)
Terminator 2 ( better than the original)
Indiana Jones trilogies
Back to Future trilogies
Toy Story 2 ( better than the original)
Lord of the Rings trilogies
Shrek 2 ( better than the original)
Harry Potter movies
Spiderman 2 ( better than the original)
Meet the Fockers (Robert De Niro and Dustin Hoffman showdown)

… as you can see the list is so small that you can count them.

But in the end, making sequels are not justified. I don’t know they want to spoil the sheen of the original movie. I won’t see Titanic 2 even if it’s going to be a ‘watchable’ movie. For me Titanic will be a timeless classic which I’ll cherish whenever I watch it.

yea.. u r rite most sequels suck, with some exceptions… but i dont quite agree wit u on godfather.I mean they both were equally good on their own way yea de niro just rocked in godfather 2.

It was my opinion that I liked Godfather 2 more than GF 1. I love Robert De Niro man.

:O spider 2 better than 1 ??? I hate that stupid doc ock story, lame.. he isnt worth a villain tho he’s the most powerfullest…

and these dubbers brought in a Terminator 4 too… which was cyber tracker 2 infact… some stupid movie…

btw - titanic 2 is posideon, its been wrongly named titanic 2 by our honourable marketers… crazy man! its a remake of a 1972 movie for god’s sake

Lol, I was just wondering what sequel is gonna be all about. In the first part Rose was recued and so was Cal, Rose’s fiancee AFAIR but she hated him. So are they gonna marry or Jafk WILL RETURN in matrix style :O ?

Chinu, there is a small correction in the post… I knew it b4 but din’t write properly. It’s not made from the same team that made Titanic.

Billy Zane dies as per Rose’s narration. So ‘Cal’ is out of the picture.

If you can remember properly, they never showed Jack is going to die. We assumed that he gets drowned. Now.. what if he surfaces again to find Rose and they meet in another Titanic….

.. I meant to say, that this aint a sequel nor has anything to do with the Titanic.. Its jus that our marketeers like putting up stupid names for movies in order to boost the movie sales… its a remake of an old flop movie and isnt from the team of titanic at all..

The movie’s actual name is Poseideon FYI…

I know it’s not from the Titanic movie. They are clearly using Titanic 2 and the Poseideon thing comes in a small font above it.

Me too saw the Poseidon trailer today. This is another publicity stunt by indian marketers of the movie, like the movie Scorpion King was marketed as Mummy 3( Infact the movie was Mummy -1).

And in your list of exceptional sequals, i don’t agree with shrek2. Shrek 2 was only as good as the original, i beleive, it’s a bit lower, except for the presence of antonio banderas. And it’s my personal preferance too.

Shrek 1 and 2 were both good. Best animations that Dreamworks can boast off which are as good a Disney-Pixar movies. But if you see Shrek for 2-3 times, I think many will like the second one only. (This is my assumption)

As you said Antonio Banderas was wonderful in puss-in-boots. It was a memorable performance. Donkey was another chracter that I liked. Donkey was also better in Shrek 2, IMO.

The climax to the movie was also dramatic and ended with Viva La Vida Loca song…
