No stopping the Pirates…

What prompted me to write this?

The DVD of the movie Rang De Basanti was encrypted in such a way that it could not be copied. UTV did it’s best to stop the DVD being pirated/ripped but the pirates won! The DVD rip of Rang De Basanti is released in many desi torrent sites and available for download. UTV needs to learn that all this copy-protection won’t work. After all, Microsoft product DVDs are copy-protected and we can rip them easily.

It’s a waste of time for all the firms to copy the pirates.. we all knew how hard Microsoft tried the security code for all it’s products and how the pirates broke the “code” within hours.

Just look at the legal threats that The Pirate Bay gets: http://thepiratebay.org/legal.php. Still they run a good site and do “social service”.

ONE nail drives out another

UTV sells the Rang de DVDs for 500 bucks. Isn’t too costly when you get to download the DVD 5/DVD 9/DVDrip (single/double CD) for free? I myself thought of getting the DVD, but this 500 Rs tag is too costly for me. Instead I have asked my friend to download the DVD 5!

So that brings the question : “Is piracy a charity/social service?“. Who will want to buy Microsoft Office for 20,000 rupees, leave alone movie DVDs for 500 rupees.

In my opinion, the best way to defeat pirates is by beating in their own game. If they sell the DVDs for 200 bucks, then they can sell more DVDs for a lesser margins and in the end of the day, they stand to gain.

These firms needs to take cue from the Railway minister, Laloo Prasad and see how he transformed Indian Railways in two years.

…and there is no stopping me!
I download 15-17gb of data every month (and maybe even more if I have a better Internet connection).

I burnt 14 DVDs today alone and dint burn all the stuffs that I wanted due to want of blank DVD medias. I have almost 50 DVDs with more than 200+ movies (and still I am yet to burn many movies in DVDs).

yaar, u can’t beat pirates by any way, u can just shut them by legally, threating downloaders with infected/crap data, but @the end pirates always win.
and by lowering price can’t help.Even if UTV gonna sell RDB @ 99 Rs. People like us(there are countless) still won’t gonna pay even that 1 & just dl it from net.
yeah u are becoming icon for present & future leechers to download stuff , including me. lol.

Hmm.. in that case, if a person decides not to buy a DVD (however reasonable the price tag be), then he won’t. The price tag affect persons like me. I’ll surely buy the DVD if it’s priced below 200 bucks.

I go with grudgy on the lowering of price..
@multi If they are gonna sell rang de basti dvd for 100 bucks then i will surely buy. Because to download the DVD5 from net it will take lot of time even though you have a 256k connection. Considering the cost of electricity bill and internet bill i would go for the original dvd if it were for 100 bucks.

i luv to download stuffs!!! so, i wont consider buying any dvd even if its 200 bucks… well if its for 99 bucks then i’ll go for that.. but “download karne ka maja hi kuch aur hai yaar!!”

That grudgy said is true. It’s not the price that matters for many. If they are not ready to buy a dvd, they won’t buy it in any case, whether the price is 200 or 2000.

But it’s people like me suffer. I love to own original DVD/VCDs. Several times I’ve settled for a VCD instead of DVD due to price difference. 90% of my collection is legal, and that costs me a lot.

BTW I’ve a collection of over 100 movies of which about 90 are original DVD/VCD.

I think you missed the “not” btw is and true. Ok, how many of us can afford Legal MS office? See, I don’t even Office installed in my PC! I go to cafe or friends/cousins house to do any work (if any) with office.

If my father is an ATM, then prolly I wouldn’t have minded the 500 bucks, maybe I’ll buy the DVD even if had costed 2k. There might be thousands od souls like me who would have otherwise purchased the DVD if it’s resonably priced (it need not be cheap). See I am gonna download (and I already have the DVDrip) the DVD 5. UTV stands to loose now, not me.

I just have two DVD 9 with me. One is Bend it like Beckham and the other is Ben hur. The former is downloaded and the latter is original. All the rest are data DVDs.

Riyaz,
How tcan you stand the quality of VCDs man? It’s not that good if you watch it in your PC. For TV viewing it’s OK. Even the VCDs cost almost 250-300 rupees.

Money matters man. But for last an year, i haven’t bought any VCDs. It’s all DVD now.

Hmmm… My dad is not an ATM too… (sighs)

The main thing is money . If you are getting the same thing for a much lesser price , then you would definately go for it except if you are very rich .
