VLC Player 0.8.5 Test 1
VLC player 0.8.5 test 1 was released a few days back for windows and other OSes.
I had a tough time with the download of the .exe file. The VLC website dint load and Firefox showed me operation timed out error. Then I downloaded the file via torrents. It was really simple and hassle free from the usual download, no need to select source, location, open up many pages etc, etc..
What’s new?
Here is some of the major changes that I noticed:
- Drag & Drop support in the playlist
- The 400% sound bar is corrected to 200%. I think there was never 400% boost in the volume, anyway the 200% of the new version seems to be the same as the 400% of the older version.
- Another interesting thing that I noticed is that, we can actually get to see the thumbnails in action. i.e. if we have a video file in any folder, the thumbnail also plays the file simultaneous with the VLC player.
There is a hell lot of changes, to know more, visit their Home Page
Still some work is yet to be done
The only complaints I have are with the progress bar. Not having one in full screen mode and when clicking on it, it doesn’t go where you wanted.
The seek bar and seeking the file to a place is still not proper. This problem is really irritating while playing DVDs. We can just seek to just one chapter at a time.
The rmvb and the real media file playing support needs to be there. I don’t even have a real player/real player alternative installed in my system, because I don’t like those players!
Again, I am very much satisfied with the best Media player that I have come across and hope they make many more improvements and bring out the 1.0 version soon!
Update: (04.04.2006)

Yea its cool, its lightest but tonned up in weight of features.
^^
No, It’s not the lightest (Foobar is light, but it’s plays only Audio files) media player. But I really want it to be light so that it goes easy on my 128mb RAM
lightest with vid playback rite ?
I can’t understand what you wanted to say..
VLC player is NOT the lightest media player, be it audio or video playback.
Okie, this is the lightest I have tried. Pl point another liter one than this. It takes around 10 Mb while playin a dvd, much lower than MPC and WMP of 20~MB
Ohh.. Qwerty, this is first time that I am coming across where a VLC player user say it’s light!
Ofcourse VLC is NOT the lightest. But when comparing with its features and playability, its the lightest in terms of size.
Ashwin in the last line do you mean version 0.1 or 1.0?
hey ashwin… rdb dvd is out… expect its dvd rip on bwt by tomorrow and in stores by end of the month
@Manas,
Corrected it

Hmm.. little costly.. maybe I’ll still buy the DVD
i find that while using vlc generally while watiching a movie a new window keeps opening up called “directx output”, by the time i finish watching the movie almost 7-8 windows are in my taskbar……
what could the reason and how do i avoid it ?
The new window comes only when you Watch VCDs. Even I have no idea as to how to stop it.
i will buy the DVD and i m thinking of pre-ordering it
hey Ashwin..
according to your post:
“Another interesting thing that I noticed is that, we can actually get to see the thumbnails in action. i.e. if we have a video file in any folder, the thumbnail also plays the file simultaneous with the VLC player.”
are you sure?
I am trying to see if it works..
could you clarify it for me again please..

Yeah man.. It works for me. Just play any video file, minimize the VLC player window, and watch the thumbnail in action
still no luck..
maybe I am not doing it right..
I have some video songs on my drive..
of which some of them show the preview (first frame of the video) when in thumbnail mode…
as default..I have assigned all of them to play by VLC player (avi, dat and mpg)
and only few files show the preview..
when I open both the files (the ones that show the preview..and the ones that dont on thumbnail..) and minimise vlc..its just static…nothing happens..
I suppose it has something to do with video overlay or some setting which I cant figure out how..
thanks for your reply..
cheers..!
happy blogging!

Hmm.. no I don’t have any other settings other than the fact that I also have kept VLC player as my default player (for Audio files, it’s Foobar).
I checked it once again.. the thumbnails do play here and in the older version (0.8.4) it dint work. Maybe I’ll see that in someother PC.
And what’s the thumbnail mode that you were talking about in your post? Does the drive by itself show previews for a frame on it’s own?
hi again..
the thumbnail mode is the default (right click, view icon as thumbnail) thumbnail view in windows XP..
where you can view the thumbnails of the image files and (some of the) video files in XP.
in case of the video files, it shows a static first frame of the video and doesn’t do any action.
All my video files used to show the first frame of their respective video content when I view them in thumbnail mode. (meaning: when I right click and view them as thumbnails in XP)
but for some reason..only few files show and the others display themselves as icons.
I believe this might be because of the fact that windows media player *also* handles these files by default and thus give a video overlay of the first frame on the thumbnail files.
the only difference that I see in the two different thumbnails is that (thumbnail showing first frame and thumbnail showing VLC icon) is that..when I right click the thumbnail 1 and go to ‘open with’ -> I see..windows media player, vlc and winamp..and the other shows all except winamp.
what do you see when you right click and go to open with?
maybe that would help..
thanks for your reply..

Hi man..
My Windows XP don’t give any live preview for thumbnails (or atleast I have not seen it playing).
And about the video overlay and WMP accessing it, I think you are right. I don’t have WMP in my scheme of things. I dunno where the .exe file is.. but I can open in WMP is I want to. So for my PC, only VLC access to thumnails/video file.
When I right click and go to open with, I get:

Hello Ashwin..
from your screenshot, I can see that all
your thumbnails have the vlc logo instead of the ‘first frame preview’..
anyways..still is a mystery why it doesn’t work for me though..! lol
anyways..thanks again for your reply..
take care..
now..get back to blogging..

Hi Imran,
I have a old PC and it takes time to come up with the preview (atleast 30-45 seconds). I was in a hurry to get the screenshot
Anyway where are u from?
hi again Ashwin..
maybe you can post a screenshot of the thumbnail videos..later..if you have time.
and..I am originally from India..down south..well..actually
)
from Madras..(chennai if you may call it!
well..the reason I had to put ‘down south’ is cuz I am from a place called ‘Kilakarai’ (near Raamanaathapuram..which is near Rameshwaram)
I guess you must be knowing the place.
Right now I am not anywhere near India..
I finished my Masters here in Scotland.
been here for more than 2 years.
currently visited India a few months back..
right now in Scotland (Aberdeen) in work visa for another 2 years..
so basically..I am on the verge of loosing my mind looking for a job.
so that sums it all up.
where are you from? and what do you do?

Hey Imran.. as you know, me too from Chennai, TN. Why man, you are looking for a job even thou you have done your UG? How’s the climate at Aberdeen?
I finished my BE and aspiring to do my MBA. I am waiting for the IIM-K result. If I don’t get thro, then I am gonna look for a job and write the exams again this year.
And I’ll post the screenshot. Right now I am whiling away the time for 2 am (that the time when the (un)happy hours start) where I can download stuffs for 6 hours. Anyway, you really can’t see whether it can play or not naa?
Hmm.. the new VLC media player 0.8.5-test2 beta is released.
I have updated and edited my post.
lol..they keep updating dont they?!
hehheh..
who said I am looking for a job
after doing my UG?
I have finished my PG already..
I am now looking for a job for a living!
I finished my BE in India
BE computer Science Engineering and Applications..
Crescent Engineering..1999-2003 batch
(sigh..the good ol days!)
why don’t you switch to VSNL broadband..?!
or some other?
the last time I was in India..
VSNL, though expensive, did provide unlimited downloads..at any time..
here..the speed is 2.0 Mbps.. and I get around 210KB/s
well..thats that!
That’s a typo Imran. I meant even after your UG, why din’t you get a job..
Here all the ISP are bloody f*kers. I have no choice but to stick with my present ISP.
