Subtitles Guide

Here is the guide which contain instructions on how to handle subtitles and make ‘paste’ subtitles into any video file.

Overview:
What are subtitles? They are texts that appear with the a audio-video file, in case you can’t understand the language or you sound is not audible enough or you are a hearing impaired person.

The subtitle file can be in any format SubRip (.srt), Subviewer (.sub), SubStation Alpha (.ssa), MicroDVD (.txt), etc..

The Framerate is an important parameter that you need to know in case you don’t have the subtitle file and have to scout for it. The Framerate usually comes in 23.976 FPS, 25k FPS or 29,976 FPS.

How to find what is the framerate in your the file is encoded? It’s very simple. Use Gspot codec information tool. More about how to use that can be found here : GSpot

Try any one of the options for “pasting” the subtitles file into your movie file depending on what media player you want to use.

1. You can use BSPlayer.
Just click and drag the .srt/other subtitles file to the playing area of the media player. Now It will play with the subtitles. This is the best way to play without any hassles.

2. If you want to use VLC player , then there is an option to add subtitles as well. But you need to play the file by starting the VLC player and not clicking on the movie file as such.

3. Using Windows media player, BSplayer, and few other players and using vobsub.
Follow this:

• Make the .srt and .avi( or whatever) the same name. You have done this. Except for the file extension, everything should be the same, so when you look there should be two files in the same name, only their icons be different.
• Now place them both in a folder. Name the folder also in the same name, but this is not required, but still do this.
• Now open the file, the vobsub should load (and hence the .srt)
• Even if the .srt don’t load, then manually start vobsub. Now make sure that vobsub is working by just starting it.
  That should help you.

when installed and if the name of the file and subtitle file are the same, we get this icon in our taskbar and the options available under the same is also shown in the screenshot.

Why all this trouble? Just d/l BSplayer and drag the .srt to the screen and the subbies load fine!

Where to find the subtitles?

This is the best place to get subtitles. Here we can find subtitles in many languages and different framerates. If we don’t find a subtitle file here, it’s more likely that we might not find anywhere else.
The only limitation is that we need to scout the subtitles manually and we have to enter the image code in the box before we can download. Also there is no advanced search wherein we can search for particular framerates,subtitle type and language.

2. Divx subtitles
Requires registration, but I bypass that process by using BugMeNot Firefox extension.

The BCCI selectors are going to select the team for the ODI series against Pakistan tommorow, 29th January. So I thought I’ll some role playing and select the Indian ODI team.

* Anil Kumble never retired and Harbajan struggles with the Kookabura ball.
* Other members are automatic selections/inclusions in the team.

Anyways we all know that Nike has sponsered the Team and we are now the men in black. Now India and New Zealand cricketers are men in black!

VLC Player 0.8.4 Review

VLC player 0.8.4 was released a few days back for windows and other OSes. Here is a review about VLC player..

VLC player Overview:
VLC (initially VideoLAN Client) is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, mp3, ogg, …) as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It can also be used as a server to stream in unicast or multicast in IPv4 or IPv6 on a high-bandwidth network.

VLC player is my favourite player as:

- It dont need any Codecs to play any file. This is the single reason that many use this program.
- Plays a variety of files (inc. DVD’s and .mov files).
- Plays .bin/.cue without converting them to VCD/DVD.
- It supports variety of OSes.
- It’s Free!
- Now it can get things to stream across network. Learn more

- And much more!

What’s new?
Here is some of the major changes that I noticed:

• The look and feel of the program has changed a lot. The icons have been changed. Here is a image as to how it looks:
  
  The icons are little bigger and looks better than what it used to look.
• The volume can now be increased upto 400%. Thats a good news, as most of the .avi which are Xvid encoded may have less volume while played and this volume boast is good change.
• I have noticed that, while playing DVDs in the older versions, it don’t shows the correct run time. Now that is fixed.. this is a small bug but it is irritating for someone like me who watch DVDs in VLC player.
• Now we can have skin 2 (fixed) and wxWidgets other than the default interface.
• As the major bug that were fixed was skin2 interface and volume down irritation bug

These are the changes that I found out, but see the changelog for the complete changes.

Still some work is yet to be done
The seek bar and seeking the file to a place is still not proper. This problem is really irritaing while playing DVDs. We can just seek to just one chapter at a time.

The CPU usage is high and maybe the developers can try and make it as light as possible and take cue from Foobar which is light on the PC and still offers many functionality.

We don’t have support for Real media files (.ram/.rm, etc..) due to copyright issues, it’s not really required for VLC to support it but atleast this can discourage the usage of Real player alternative which is illegal and Real should take cue from Apple who given the right to use the quicktime files (.mov/.mp4, etc..) along with VLC player.

Now it seems that the developers have copyright and other issues with European countries and may not be developed. Hope they get out of the mess…

I wonder how long it will take for them to release 0.1 version.. still we are stuck in this 0.8.X

Adding Subtitles with VLC player:
There is an option to add subtitles as well. But you need to play the file by starting the VLC player and not clicking on the movie file as such.
It offers many other advanced features as frame delay, font size, and much more. The screenshot is shown below:

The only trouble is that in case we play any widescreen movie, the texts comes in the playing area and not in the black blank space below.

Genre: Action / Crime

This movie got the best cast and they come face to face as well! Al pacino (Cop) and Robert De Niro (robber) star in this beauty and they come face to face for only two time in the movie. First time they meet, they talk their preoccupation and inability to have a personal life. At the end they just have that. The second time they come face each other is at the end of the movie and one of the die and yet they don’t like what they did. Both De niro and Pacino did a good job. Al Pacino shed tears at the end of the movie and he was amazing. The two sequences are well connected.

This movie has the best shoot-out, it’s not the one which we will see in the usual type with macho men shooting each other…it had a small hot

A thrilling finale
The best part of the movie is when De niro comes out of a hotel (after murdering) and just when he wanted to lead a good life, Pacino comes, De Niro leaves the women he wanted to live with and gives him a chase to the LA airport..where a good thriller awaits us.. Has a emotional finish as well.

Final word:
Heat is one of the best cop and robber movie I have seen. It’s a 171 minutes epic and worth watch every second of it. Being a Pacino and De Niro fan I can’t be more than happy.

Most of us would have a broadband connection at home or office. But many of us don’t know how to download files using the Bittorrent. So I am writing a guide to help you peeps.

Procedure:

1. Download any torrent client like bittornado (which I use) or ABC torrent

2. Go to sites like www.torrentspy.com or www.mininova.org

2b. or google for torrent file.

3. Download the torrent file

The torrent file usually is in order of 25-100kb only

4. Open the torrent file (open with torrent client)

5. Complete the formalities (save to location, changing file names,etc..)

6. Wait for the downloads to get over ( u cant view the file while it’s downloading)
the download has to be 100% complete to view it.

The download has to be 100% complete to view it. But some media player like VLC player play even some partially downloaded stuffs.

The day started off boring and disappointing as usual for Chennai vasi’s when there is Cricket Match being played. The rest of India would watch and we will be left to see the scores in News channels or listen to AIR FM radio commentary. At 10:15 AM my cousin called me and asked me tune to Sun TV; they were scrolling a message that from today Chennai people with SCV connection (a MSO) can watch the cricket matches without the need of a fucking set-top box!

There is No free lunch
At 11:00 AM, they aired Ten Sports with their logo and their advertisements. This was courtesy SCV-Ten Sports. DD would have bagged the telecast, had they agreed to Ten Sports “offer” to air the telecast complete with Ten Sports logo and their advertisements. They did not even agree to pay compensation for the expense Ten Sports incur. DD states Ten Sports should share the feed keeping the viewer’s interests in mind as Ten Sports don’t have a large viewer base as DD and it’s a pay channel.

Now if DD wants to “protect” the interests of the viewers, they should agreed to Ten Sports terms and aired the series. Now assuming if they bagged the telecast, will they air without advertisements? I hope DD don’t get the telecast for ODI Hutch series also, now that Chennai people don’t care when we can watch the match in Ten Sports!

The same story:
It’s gonna be a long for the Indians, considering that the wicket is batsmen friendly. Faisalabad seems to a tame and docile pitch as the one in Lahore. Run feasts will continue and this match will head to a draw. I personally prefer the Dust Bowl pitches in India, atleast we can expect a result!

Anyways, this is a wonderful news to Chennai people. Now all the Ten Sports telecasted cricket matches will be aired.
